Welcome to my counselor page, friends!
My name is Julio Ginel and I am a licensed mental health counselor in New York and Georgia. I am a proud Puerto Rican, born in Ponce and raised in the South Bronx. Initially, i was to be an artist. However, the goal was redirected when i was not accepted at my desired school. I obtained my Good Enough Diploma and joined the Army. In the army, i realized that i was good at listening and not judging. 13-years of military service later, i pursued a bachelor’s degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College. After years of working different positions in the mental health field, i decided to pursue a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from NYIT in Old Westbury.
With experience in the mental health field for over 20 years, i know two truths. First, clients find it difficult to process tough material. Secondly, a relationship built on trust makes progress more achievable. The process of therapy will be harder and less pleasurable when the client does not trust me. As a result, an empathetic and validating approach is important to build healthy connections with my clients. Having a healthy connection is the start of any good relationship, including therapy. My approach is eclectic in nature. I utilize what i feel would be useful for the client to progress. The options range from evidence based techniques to more cutting edge experiential methods that will touch on emotions and feelings.
Therapy is not a cure so i hope you are not expecting to be exorcised of what ails you. It is more of a light on your path to your own truth. You are the expert of your own experience. I am the faithful companion, invited to be a part of that experience. The goal is what you make it.
